In this Privacy Notice, any reference to “Laat Waai Papegaai NPC”, “LWP” or “we” refers to Laat Waai Papegaai NPC, a non-profit company that helps parrots and their humans, we are based in Gauteng, but we operate nation-wide.
The Protection of Personal Information Act, 4 of 2013 (hereafter the POPI Act) was enacted to give effect to constitutional right of privacy. The POPI Act was promulgated into effect on 1 July 2020 whereafter all persons that process
personal information have afforded until 1 July 2021 to ensure compliance with the provisions of the Act
Your privacy is very important to us. Accordingly, we have developed this privacy policy in order for you to understand how we collect, use, communicate and disclose and make use of personal information.
We collect personal information about you, either:
• Directly from you when you complete a membership, adoption or sickbay application form, or when you place an order with our charity shop, electronically, telephonically or by way
of a hard copy;
• Indirectly from you when you interact with us electronically by way of our website, forums, or social media channels, which may include the collection of metadata (data about data);
• Where we require personal
information in order to provide you with our products and membership, adoption or emergency fund (or otherwise considered sickbay services) if you do not provide complete and accurate information we may not be able to assist you..
You are responsible for informing the Laat Waai Papegaai NPC if your information changes.
Section 1 of the POPI Act defined “Personal Information” as: information relating to an identifiable, living, natural person, and where it is applicable, an identifiable, existing juristic person, including, but not limited to—

information relating to the race, gender, sex, pregnancy, marital status, national, ethnic or social origin, colour, sexual orientation, age, physical or mental health, well-being, disability, religion, conscience, belief, culture,
language and birth of the person;
ii. information relating to the education or the medical, financial, criminal or employment history of the person;
iii. any identifying number, symbol, e-mail address, physical address, telephone number, location information, online identifier or other particular assignment to the person;
iv. The biometric information of the person;
v. the personal opinions, views or preferences of the person;
vi. correspondence sent by the person that is implicitly or explicitly of a private or confidential nature or further
correspondence that would reveal the contents of the original correspondence;
vii. the views or opinions of another individual about the person; and
viii. the name of the person if it appears with other personal information
relating to the person or if the disclosure of the name itself would reveal information about the person;
ix. “Process” means
• Any operation or activity or any set of operations, whether or not by automatic means, concerning personal information, including—
• the collection, receipt, recording, organization, collation,
storage, updating or modification, retrieval, alteration, consultation or use;
• dissemination by means of transmission, distribution or making available in any other form; or
• merging, linking, as well as restriction, degradation,
erasure or destruction of information;
Your relationship with Laat Waai Papagaai determines the exact nature of the personal information we process, and the purpose for which such personal information is collected and used. However, in many cases, if we are handling your
personal information as part of our role as a non-profit company who offers membership, adoption and welfare services and who collects or receives donations, the information we may process includes the following:
Information about you – for example, your name, identity number, age, gender, date of birth, nationality, occupation, lifestyle, current income level
Information about your parrots, including , medical history and any existing conditions of the parrots, it’s species and type as well as information about its age and health.
Contact information – in some cases,
for example, we may receive your email, address, phone number and postal address.
Online information – for example, cookies and IP address (your computer’s internet address), if you use our websites, apps and/or social media channels.
Contractual information – for example, details about the
pet insurance policies you hold and with whom you hold them.
We may collect certain sensitive information when you apply for adoption, fostering, apply for assistance for your parrot or when you sign up as a special member (in the case of an avian veterinarian).
Any special/sensitive
information we collect will be treated with utmost confidentiality and respect.
